Project Showcase: International Rescue Committee

Highlighting the Spirit of IRC's Outstanding Teams: Professional Portraits and Engaging Team Interactions.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) sought a photographer to refresh their organisation headshots and capture dynamic team moments during a two-day workshop. This assignment presented a great opportunity to work with a large team, capturing both formal and candid images that represent the organization's professionalism and collaborative spirit. The result was a series of vibrant, authentic photographs showcasing the IRC's team at work, both in meetings and in action.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global humanitarian organization dedicated to helping people whose lives and livelihoods have been shattered by conflict and disaster. They provide critical aid in areas such as health, education, economic wellbeing, and empowerment, serving refugees, displaced individuals, and those affected by crises around the world. Their mission is to restore safety, dignity, and hope to millions, empowering people to survive and rebuild their lives.

The Brief

The organisation approached us to refresh their teams headshots during a 2-3 day series of workshops and meetings.

Their goal was to capture high-quality, professional images of their team while they had a large number of staff gathered at the external venue. The workshop offered a unique opportunity to not only update their headshots but also document their teams actively collaborating and engaging in discussions throughout the event.

Process

Over the course of the two-day workshop, I coordinated sessions with IRC staff during breaks in their meetings and activities.

The schedule allowed us to take formal headshots in a bright, open lobby area, taking advantage of the natural light to create soft, welcoming portraits. For the action shots, we moved throughout the venue, capturing the team in various positions—presenting, collaborating, and engaging in discussions and activities. This approach ensured that the photographs were diverse and representative of the team’s work environment.

Vision

IRC’s primary objective was to modernize the look of their organisation's headshots and to reflect a natural, approachable image of their teams. They wanted images that represented the dynamic, collaborative spirit of their organization. By capturing both formal headshots and action shots of the team in meetings and working together, we could highlight the professionalism and passion behind their work in a fresh, authentic way.

Concept Refinement

Given the venue was a hotel, I had to adapt to the available spaces. For the headshots, I opted for the lobby area with natural daylight, which provided a clean, airy backdrop and allowed the portraits to have a natural, bright feel. For the meeting shots, I worked with the flow of the event, capturing candid moments of the team interacting in different parts of the venue, from conference rooms to more informal spaces. The combination of formal headshots and in-action shots resulted in a portfolio of images that reflected both the professionalism and collaborative nature of the IRC team.
